Is it surprising your back hurts?
|
Research shows that 4 out of 5 Golfers will suffer with unnecessary back pain, on average even a professional player will sustain 2 injuries a year and lose 5 weeks of playing time. Following back pain, the left wrist and left shoulder areas are the most commonly affected. (For you left handed golfers it’s the right side)
Many players say they ache by the 18th hole and even still ache before the start of the next game………… Does this feel like you?
This can be due to several factors such as poor stability which leaves the joints vulnerable to low grade trauma. Stiffness in your muscles and joints leaves other areas having to do more than their fair share of the load.
As Chartered Physiotherapists we are skilled and experienced in analysing movement, assessing your biomechanics and treating injuries, and at Broadstone Physiotherapy our physiotherapists have undergone further extensive training in applying our knowledge to you the golf enthusiast.
3 Key Ways Broadstone Physiotherapy can help you
Individual Screening:-
A thorough biomechanical assessment of your muscles, joints, posture and balance. This will highlight any muscle imbalances, joint stiffness, postural or balance limitations which may be affecting your golf game. This will help us put together your individual program
Personal Exercise Programme:- A programme of golf specific exercises to improve your game potential. We can strengthen any weak patterns of movement, lengthen tight and shortened muscle groups, loosen stiff joints, correct any poor postural patterns, increase your core stability and improve balance control.
Your Treatment :-
If treatment is required this will involve ‘hands on’ treatment techniques such as mobilising joints, myofascial release and electrotherapy but importantly exercises to continually correct and strengthen with an emphasis on returning you to your sport.
Our aim is to enable you to maximise your body’s potential for golf and to help you enjoy moving freely again.
Golf is an asymmetrical sport requiring flexibility, strength, co-ordination balance and endurance.
6 Factors Essential for your Back
We have included these extra notes which you should find useful.
Symmetry - Golf is by nature a Asymmetrical sport. Repeated movement, say from left to right in a right-handed
Golfer, causes tightness in one set of muscle groups and weakness in the opposing group, causing repeated trauma to over used joints. The Set Up posture tightens the muscle groups at the front of your body and weakens the muscle groups at the back.
Flexibility - required to enable the right movement to occur in your joints, such as rotation in the correct areas of the spine. Your back swing is a combination of rotation through your pelvis, hips, spine as well as shoulders. Restricted movement in any one area is going to throw more stress onto another.
Strength - essential to control your swing, producing power from your hips and legs but controlling the rotation to achieve a high and accurate Club head speed - whilst still protecting your back. You need 4 horsepower to drive a swing, 35 pounds of muscle is required to produce this power. This power is generated in your legs, buttocks and abdomen.
Balance - necessary as you transfer weight during the back swing and again
in the down swing. The correct weight shift can increase the club
head spread by 14.4% changing a drive force from 200 yards to
229 yards (did you know that elite golfers can stand on one leg
with their eyes shut for up to 28 seconds!!).
Co-ordinaton - vital to allow all of the above to occur in a smooth accurate
manner. A swing takes less than a second with the collision occurring in 0.0005 seconds. Miss the sweet spot and the ball will travel too high or weakly travel onto the fairway.
Endurance - important - you have to keep this up for 18 holes!!
